In our multicultural society, many people live in a bilingual and bicultural context, including us the Korean-Americans. Such a context presents particular difficulties in terms of defining our self-identity and self-worth. Who are we? Where do we belong? What is our purpose in life? As Christians, we are called to ground ourselves as children of God and brothers and sisters in Christ. We cherish a set of beliefs and values as we cherish our relationship with God and Christ.
But sometimes, our faith is not enough to counter the challenges of life. That is why belonging to a loving, caring, and motivating community of faith is so important. We find strength in communal solidarity and fellowship; we find insight, wisdom, and new ideas towards a better and a fulfilling life. In it we learn to embrace our differences, affirm unity in diversity, and ultimately come to not just a peaceful coexistence but a joyful one. I believe that is what God desires of us as human beings—as bearers of God¡¯s image.
